Standing there in the warehouse, I just had to admire all the various types of composites around. Another big part of determining the flammability of a material is doing a Flame Test Process. It's all about subjecting the material to a gradual burn and watching its behavior.
It was pretty cool to see various materials behave when exposed to fire. I found out that material with a V0 rating, meaning it hardly catches fire at all, exhibits excellent resistance to fire. That's especially true in sectors such as aerospace and automotive where safety is extremely critical.
Building Codes and Regulations
How inflammable something is also counts big time in building process regulations. When I started to explore more into this, I saw all kinds of regulatory guidelines that say what kind of flame resistance rating stuff needs to have for building process.
Like, for instance, the International Building Code tells you what flame resistance rating building materials should have. It just highlights why it's so important to follow these codes to ensure public safety.
Environmental Impact
And you can't ignore how fire retardants affect the environment. When I kept looking, I learned that some fire retardants can cause health problems and damage the environment.
So, I started looking for better fire retardants that are more environmentally friendly. The tricky part is figuratively working out how to balance ensuring safety and showing environmental consideration.
